As another year comes to a close and a new one begins, I find myself reflecting on the past 12 years of my life as a university professor. It's been a remarkable journey, filled with challenges, joys, and countless opportunities for growth and learning.
One thing that has struck me over the years is just how much teaching and learning are intertwined. As a teacher, I am constantly learning from my students - their perspectives, experiences, and insights have challenged and inspired me in ways I never could have imagined.
But teaching has also taught me valuable lessons about the power of connection, community, and personal growth. Here are some key principles and practices that have helped me thrive as a university professor over the past 12 years:
Connection: Building meaningful connections with students, colleagues, and mentors has been invaluable over the years. Whether it's through mentorship, networking events, or simply taking the time to get to know others, cultivating connections can help us feel more supported, engaged, and fulfilled in our work.
Lifelong learning: As educators, we have a responsibility to model lifelong learning for our students. This means staying curious, open-minded, and willing to embrace new ideas and perspectives. By continuing to learn and grow ourselves, we can inspire our students to do the same.
Mindfulness: Teaching can be demanding, stressful, and overwhelming at times. Practicing mindfulness - whether through meditation, deep breathing, or simply taking a few moments to center ourselves - can help us stay grounded and focused in the midst of chaos and uncertainty.
Humility: Finally, perhaps the most important lesson I've learned over the years is the importance of humility. As educators, it's easy to fall into the trap of thinking we have all the answers. But the truth is, we are all lifelong learners, and there is always more to discover and explore. Embracing humility can help us stay open to new ideas and perspectives, and create a more collaborative, supportive, and inclusive learning environment for everyone.
As I look back on the past 12 years of my life as a university professor, I am filled with gratitude for the many blessings and opportunities that have come my way. I am grateful for the countless students who have inspired me, challenged me, and touched my life in so many profound ways. And I am excited for what the future may hold - for myself, for my students, and for the wider community of educators and learners around the world.
So here's to another year of teaching and learning, of growth, transformation, and joy. May this new year bring us all closer to our goals, our dreams, and our highest aspirations. Happy New Year!
